Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
brings Marseille's coldest conditions, with highs typically around 11°C (53°F) and overnight lows dropping to around 3°C (38°F). It's rarely freezing at sea level. But the Mistral can make it feel significantly colder.
is barely warmer, with highs edging up to 12°C (55°F) and lows still around 3°C (38°F). Rainfall drops compared to January. Around 30mm on average, and you'll get a decent proportion of bright days.
marks the beginning of a real transition. Highs reach around 16°C (61°F) and lows around 6°C (43°F), which is warm enough for café terraces if you're dressed for it. Rainfall stays modest at roughly 30mm, and the city starts to feel like it's waking up.
sees daytime highs around 19°C (66°F) and nights around 9°C (48°F); pleasant enough that you'll want to be outside. But requiring a layer after dark. Rainfall ticks up slightly to around 51mm, arriving typically in short bursts.
is one of the more reliably enjoyable months. Highs reach around 23°C (74°F), lows around 13°C (55°F), and rainfall drops back to approximately 38mm. The sea is still too cold for most swimmers. But hiking conditions in the Calanques are close to optimal.
tips Marseille into summer mode, with highs around 27°C (82°F) and comfortable nights around 17°C (62°F). Rainfall falls to about 28mm for the month. The beaches are filling up, the Vieux-Port is busy with boat traffic, and the city is operating at high energy.
is the driest month Marseille experiences. Typically just 10mm of rain across the entire month, and also one of the hottest, with highs around 30°C (87°F) and nights around 19°C (67°F). The Calanques are at their most dramatic for swimming, though trail closures for fire risk may apply.
matches July's temperatures almost exactly. Highs around 30°C (86°F), lows around 19°C (66°F), but sees slightly more rainfall at around 25mm, often in the form of brief afternoon thunderstorms. High season crowds are at their maximum, which means the Calanques and the Old Port can feel packed on weekends. The city's energy is high, and the evenings are warm well into the night.
September is when Marseille's weather turns interesting again, and comfort isn't guaranteed. Highs drop to around 25°C (78°F) and lows to 15°C (60°F), but average rainfall leaps to roughly 81mm, the year's wettest figure. These rains arrive as sudden, heavy Mediterranean events rather than steady drizzle. Pack smart.
October continues the autumn pattern with highs around 21°C (70°F) and lows around 12°C (54°F), plus still-significant rainfall averaging about 74mm. The sea stays warm from summer, so swimming remains surprisingly viable on good days. The Calanques reopen if they closed for fire risk. Autumn light on the limestone cliffs can be exceptional.
November sees Marseille cool noticeably, with highs around 15°C (60°F) and lows around 7°C (45°F). Rainfall is high again at about 76mm, and the Mistral tends to be more frequent. That said, Marseille in November has its own appeal: the fish market at the Vieux-Port, the city's bouillabaisse restaurants, the relative absence of crowds.
December rounds out the year with highs around 12°C (54°F) and lows around 4°C (39°F), with rainfall dropping back to about 41mm. It's noticeably quieter than any other month. The city is worth visiting if you're interested in Marseille as a working port city rather than as a summer resort.
